If you’ve been concentrating intently over the past few weeks to Facebook ,Twitter, Tumblr or any other Social Media outlet you would have read about, reposted or retweeted the many articles surrounding a compilation of artist’s from all around the globe, gathered together to celebrate a rather immense genre of music! This multi-geographical compilation of like minded artist’s, carries the burgeoning weight of an underground generation intent on making it’s mark on an already declining musical landscape full of bubble pop, mock indie & boy band’s. This immense genre of music hid itself away, under the radar, far from the eye’s & ear’s of the many vulturistic music related whore’s that circled this ever decreasing musical landscape looking for a fast buck. Yes, we all agree that shoegaze never went away! It just retreated to to the rehearsal room’s, garage’s & bedroom’s of creatively astute kid’s focused on keeping the scene alive. Supported by a few dedicated blog’s, radio station’s, independent record companies & online magazine’s, from all four corner’s of our little planet, this scene was biding it’s time before erupting onto today’s musical landscape and unleashing a sound so uniquely blissful, that is would be very hard to ignore it’s arrival. If this is a resurgence? or even a revival?, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of thing’s. This new wave of shoegaze is immense & it’s here right now! That is why this compilation of underground artist’s is worth it’s weight in gold. It bring’s a hell of a lot diversity to today’s musical table and it also give’s a snapshot of what is actually going on in the shoegazing world right now! Every single one of  the artist’s on this release alone deserve’s our admiration & respect. We need to embrace them & enjoy every single blissful second of what they’re creating.

” Revolution – The Shoegaze Revival’ is an epic, truly international 30-track compilation comprised of outstanding original material. Such band’s have set the stage for shoegaze pioneers’ return to today’s scene by upholding their wall of sound and painting it with breathtaking colour. Now, two of the afore mentioned independent record companies, the epic ‘Ear To Ear Records’ & ‘Gerpfast Kolektif Records’ have gathered an array of band’s from all four corners of the world to showcase a scene that I hold very close to my heart. This free to download release, supported by the immense Shoegaze Love Music Blog, The Record Stache, DKFM Shoegaze Radio Shameless Promotion PR & The Primal Music Blog, to name but a few, will explode onto the musical landscape on 11th February 2015 and leave a legacy, for not only today’s shoegazing band’s & fan’s alike to admire, but it will also leave a musical footnote for future generation’s of gazer’s to enjoy forever!

1) Duelectrum – She Doesn’t Feel The Sun.

a4285252009_2

A truly epic compilation needed a truly epic opening act. Duelectrum are a shoegaze/noise pop band from São Paulo, Brazil, formed by Filipe Albuquerque (guitars), Franklin Weise (bass) and Elson Barbosa (drums), who also plays bass guitar in the super indie post-rock group Herod. As a duo (Filipe e Franklin), Duelectrum independently released the “Duelectr1” EP in 2001, which is now out of print. The “Electrolândia” EP was released in 2008 by Pisces Records and Sinewave. Sinewave released the “Tempestadestelar” EP, which contains songs recorded between 2002 and 2005, in 2002, as well as the single “Chocolate Love” in 2008. In August 2014, the band released “She Doesn’t Feel the Sun” (EP), with a guest appearance by Lucas Lippaus (Herod, Hopping to Collide With, S.O.M.A.) on guitars. Track one on this release, ‘She Doesn’t Feel The sun’, is a mind-blowing maelstrom of sound that captivates you from the very beginning! It open’s the door to this compilation & leads you by the hand through an immense amount of amazing music.

2) Trementina – Hazy Youth

a2196942846_2

Trementina started as an idea in a small rainy town in a small unknown country (Chile). Cristobal (guitar) wanted to create something new, something that had never been seen there, so he began searching for this new sound, making a post-punk band together with his friend Lucas (bass guitar) and some childhood friends. Nevertheless, the style didn’t fulfill them. They wanted to make something fresh, with some old twisted shoegaze freedom. So they left their mind open and started to make some noise with those pedals. But something was missing – they were lacking a lead singer. Playing this kind of craziness required a female voice to sweeten this music, so they asked Vanessa (vocals and guitar) to join them. One day Vanessa went to Cristobal’s house feeling really sick due to turpentine poisoning. She was an arts student, so she always was complaining about the nausea that comes with hours of painting. Cristobal was curious about the name “trementina”, as it’s a pretty name and a beautiful concept. Turpentine (Trementina) it’s something used to make art, but also to erase it and start over, it was perfect. After they recorded a few songs in Cristobal’s home studio, Soundcloud brought their sound all over the world – to fans, radio, magazines and blogs. It also led to them releasing their first self-recorded EP through Japanese label Vinyl Junkies.

3) Sounds of Sputnik – Overdrive feat. Ummagma

a2688243002_2

Sounds of Sputnik is a project spearheaded by Roma Kalitkin, whose signature sound mixes post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop with a slight kickback to noise pop. He draws inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, and Slowdive. Dubbing himself a “white crow”, the music he makes has always gone against trends within his home country of Russia, both as a solo artist and for the 20 years he played in various post-punk, alternative and shoegaze bands. Sounds of Sputnik released his debut album “New Born” on Ear to Ear Records (UK) on November 21, 2014. Sounds of Sputnik has grabbed the attention of numerous celebrated people, who became involved in this album, including Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre), Malcolm Holmes (OMD), Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid), and Ummagma, who co-wrote, co-produced and performed on this album. Sounds of Sputnik also received a top prize at the 2014 Jagermeister Russian Indie Music Awards in the ‘Young Blood’ nomination category, as well as one for Best East European Video at the 2014 Australian Independent Music Video Awards. We reviewed Sounds of Sputnik’s debut album for The Primal Music Blog and you can read what we though of it HERE.

4) Sharesprings – Maydear

a2172667700_2

Sharesprings is a fascinating twee shoegaze indie pop band from Jakarta, Indonesia, which was founded in 2006. The band are made up of Ardhi Yudho – vocal, guitar, Rusli Budianto – drums, Putriani Mulyadi – vocal, guitar, Yanu Fuadi – bass. They have strong influences ranging from My Bloody Valentine to the Ecstasy and Wine’s era, Yo La Tengo, and Eternal. The band is rooted in the element of late 80’s and early 90’s music. With a simple structure, the indie pop concept combines with the shoegaze style and noisy atmosphere backdrop. In February 2014, they released a split-single with The Wellington on Heyho! Records. The band formed as a trio in the middle of this decade and produced the demo ‘It’s Just Noise And Pop’, followed by their first official single in 2010 with ‘I Love To See You (Daydreaming Me)‘.

“They cross the classic shoegazing sound of the late 80’s with the jangly guitar-pop style of bands on Sarah Records. The result is a twee-pop music that is cool, but surrounded by noise distortion and feedback that are rough and based on raw guitar”  – (Wastedrockers.wordpress.com)

5) Thud – Lime

a1351274524_2

Five weirdos got together in the winter of 2012. In the very early days of this band, there were only three people and they were Wang on bass, Wai on drums and Andy on guitar. Wang and Wai, who founded the band, are also brothers. After trying hard to find a one more person to join, at last, Andy found his classmate Kim, followed by Sky on guitar. Although each of the band members has different musical preferences and backgrounds, they all get along well and manage to create rather fine dreamy music together. While Thud have yet to deliver their first official release, they have already got the attention of NME, Sounds Better With Reverb and Drowned in Sound. In the words of Dom Gourlay of Drowned in Sound: “Self-confessed Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine obsessives Thud are something of an anomaly where the Hong Kong music scene is concerned. While many of their contemporaries take the traditional cantopop route, they can be heard conjuring up experimental pieces such as recent single ‘Lime’, which carries an ethereal grace in a similar vein to Seefeel or Moonshake back in the day.”

6) //orangenoise – Puking Rainbows

Orangenoise

Loud guitars, ambiguous vocals and driving rhythms are the crux of the //orangenoise sound. //Orangenoise are: Guitars and Vocals by Talha Asim Wynne , Synth and Keys by Faizan Riedinger and Talha Asim Wynne , Bass by Daniel Arthur Panjwaneey & Drums by Danial Hyatt. Formed in early 2010, the band members’ varied musical backgrounds create a saturated mix of electronic, garage and psychedelia straight from the dense heat of Karachi, Pakistan. Taking their cues from shoegaze and 60’s psychedelia, the band washes out the senses with their textured rhythms, while the mind floats freely with catchy hooks embedded deep into their airy vocals. Simply put, //orangenoise is an old machine from the past, modded for the present.

7) Ummagma – Live and Let Die

UMMAGMA

Ummagma began in Moscow in 2003 and have been living between Ukraine and Canada since then. They finally released two LP’s (Ummagma & Antigravity) in 2012 and more recently released the single ‘Rotation’ and the ‘Lama’ and ‘Kiev Remixes’ LP’s on Emerald & Doreen Recording’s. They also produced, co-wrote and performed on Sounds of Sputnik’s debut album ‘New Born’, released on UK boutique label Ear to Ear Record’s in November 2014. Ummagma has had a full-page feature in Rolling Stone Russia, has won Alternative Eurovision competitions for 2 years in a row (Amazing Radio & Pure 107.8 FM), and has received 4 awards at the 2013 and 2014 Independent Music Video Awards. In 2013, Ummagma was declared “Band of the Year” in the blog Shoegaze Love. Ummagma has also caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have remixed tracks for release on Ear to Ear Records in late spring 2015.

8) Jaguwar – MuffHead

a2917606448_2

Three people fell in love over noisy soundscapes and purple stars. Influenced by too many coffee and cigarettes while listening to My Bloody Valentine Vinyls in the dark they put together fuzzy reverb guitars with punk rock attitude. Jaguwar are: Guitar & Vocals: Lemmy Noize, Bass & Vocal’s & Lyric’s: Oyèmi Noize, Drums: Arian Mauksch.  In June 2014 the first EP ‘I’ came out to show the world how sugar noise can be. It was released on June 13, 2014 via Pinmusik – Pretty In Noise Netlabel.

9) Stella Diana – Isabeau

Stella Diana

“Stella Diana were formed in Naples in 1998. They are one of the few bands in Italy offering a blend of shoegaze with new wave and post-punk. They have firmly found their sound somewhere between Ride, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and The Chameleons… After releasing ‘Supporto Colore’ (2007) and ‘Gemini’ (2011), which were well received by music critics, they toured around Italy several times and also abroad. In 2014, they released the LP ‘41. 61. 93’, representing a perfect synthesis of distorted guitars and dilated sounds. The song ‘Isabeau’ was inspired by the character of Isabeau d’Anjou, the character from the 1990s film Ladyhawke, starring Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. “Stella Diana have produced a record that sounds like shoegaze no one had ever done in Italy”  – (Rock.it)

“Gemini is a great album, not only because it is very difficult to find another shoegaze band in Italy so compelling, but also because they manage to perfectly blend with the concept (dream) pop, walls of distortion and the Italian language. It is virtually impossible to find another band like them in Italy”  – (indieforbunnies.it)

We reviewed their stunning album ‘41.61.93’ for the Primal Music Blog and you can read what we thought about it HERE.

10) Lights That Change – Theme 1 Stage 3

a1493985105_2

Lights That Change are a shoegaze, dreampop, ethereal wave project that renowned British producer Marc Joy began years ago. It represents a culmination of his many years producing, engineering, and mastering artists from a broad range of genres, as well as his own solo and collaborative creative endeavours. This is an initiative to get back to why he began a career in music in the first place, looking for the perfect dreamscape sonic horizon, created primarily on the basis of guitars. This project is envisioned in a similar format to This Mortal Coil, for instance – a colourful revolving door of collaborators, with Marc as the foundation. Musician Lisa Von H contributed vocals for the Lights That Change EP and Beautiful Soul single, as well as tracks on the Rainbow On Your Shoulder EP. The latter two were released through Ear to Ear Records. More recently, Lights That Change have been working with numerous other collaborators, including Malcolm Holmes of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). The result of these new developments shall be revealed on Lights That Change’s debut album, which is due early 2015.
