With earlier releases from Princess more firmly in the shoegaze camp, the two tracks that make up this latest single see the Dublin duo trip the light fantastic into Stereolab territory. Black Window’s insistent and mathy guitar goes in satisfying circles. The scuzzed-up vocals and high-pitched feedback that plays at the edge of our hearing evokes 90s noise – that’s compounded when the whole thing erupts in fuzz and chaos. There is more than a soupçon of Laetitia Sadier evident as composure is regained towards the end.
On Sick Ties, vocal layers upon vocal to a reach velvety crescendo, before the bass and drums drives droning into a krautrock groove. Keening guitar breaks the spell and calls us back to somewhere much more clean and crystalline.
Aside from the Dublin connection and some sonic sympathies, Princess appear to share Kevin Shields’ love of the studio, suggesting their forthcoming album will be an ambitious affair.
