ARTIST: 2:Frail

RELEASE: Vagues Noires

RELEASE DATE: 01/08/15

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

With various sub-genres emerging along the baseline of this modern day underground shoegaze resurgence its hardly surprising that a post – punk inspired & dark wave induced musical outfit would come along to shake up the multitude of scenester shoegazing bands out there today who have spent most of the past 18 months resting on their laurels happily riding on the back slaps from nostalgia driven die hard old school gazers & the impressionistic fanatical new gazing fraternity who’s frenetic support of their modern day heroes seems to have no end point at all & in turn only feeds the now fit to bursting shoegaze musical cash cow.

Imagine then, if you will, a musical world where sombre melancholic sonic tones crested a wave of reverberated soundscapes intertwined at times with shoegazing impressions but held fast to the post – punk sound ideals of the late 70’s & early 80’s?  Think ‘The Cure’ meets ‘For Against’ but sprinkled with a little bit of ‘Joy Division’. New York based dark wave gazers ‘2:Frail’ released their immense dark gaze inspired 4 track EP entitled ‘Vagues Noires’ to the masses back in early August. The EP was mixed by Monte Vallier (Soft Moon, Weekend) at Ruminator Audio, San Francisco, June 2015 & Mastered by Josh Bonati.

The EP opens up with the magical ‘Dawn’. A throbbing bass & shimmering guitar line sitting atop a steady drum beat introduces the rather impressive effected vocal arrangement. This track builds & builds with hints of shoegaze but stays true to a minimalist post punk ethos from the off. Its probably my favourite track on this EP actually.  Next up is the reverb induced soundscape – ‘Double Shadow’. The vocal arrangement here has a vulnerable intensity to it but floats on a wave of sonically brilliant goodness. A very impressive track indeed & worth a second listen. Track 3 enters the arena & its opening salvos instantly remind me of ‘The Cure’. ‘Your Life Backwards’ is an intense slice of dark wave magic with hints of post-rock intertwined with haunting vocals & shoegazing tendencies! Last up on this epic EP  is ‘The Guilt’. Probably the closest ‘full on’ shoegazing track on this release, It swims in reverb & shimmering vocal effects whilst the guitars attack with an intense wall of sound. Definitely one for the headphones & worth every second of your time.

‘Vagues Noires’ is out right now via the bands bandcamp page. With various live outings planned over the next few months ‘2:Frail’ are definitely ones to watch out for.
