EP REVIEW | No Sun – Warm

RELEASE DATE: 05/12/15

RECORD COMPANY: Don’t Look Down Records

I don’t really like to review any music for the month of December as it’s normally the time to compile your ‘Best Of’ tracks from the proceeding year so this review is out of the ordinary for me. But, this year I’m making an exception to the rule and its down to these two things: 1) This 3 track release from ‘No Sun’ is pretty special & 2) We love supporting small underground record labels like San Francisco based ‘Don’t Look Down Records’ who in turn are supporting new shoegazing bands like ‘No Sun’.

Salt Lake City natives ‘No Sun’ create warm fuzzy shoegazing soundscapes with melodic dream pop inspired vocal lines & a hint of cinematic post-rock.  Their latest release ‘Warm’ swims in a ever evolving sea of reverberation!  I really love the way this band can switch from thundering layered shoegaze to quiet, reflective passages that leave the listener hanging suspended in ethereal joy! This EP’s opening track entitled ‘Ache’ does just that! Track 2 ‘Erase’ explodes with a wave of layered guitar effects, thundering drums & that impressive vocal track that pulls you along with it until finally veering through a slow, sonically brilliant trough on route to its ending notes. Musically reminiscent at times to early (Creation Records era) Swervedriver, ‘Erase’ is possibly my favourite track on this entire release! The EP’s closing track entitled ‘Warm’ is a dark crawling affair  with another impressive vocal performance that sits on top of a fuzzy cinematic musical arrangement interspersed with an atmospheric edge!

‘No Sun’ have a really, really great sound that caught me off guard from my very first listen. This 3 track release will enthral you from the off. I’ll look forward to what comes next from these Salt Lake City shoegazers.
