ARTIST: St Deluxe
RELEASE: Draw A Line
RELEASE DATE: 05/02/16
Seven months on from their last impressive single release entitled ‘Highly Strung’ & with some tracks spawned out of the same recording sessions that brought us seminal psychedelic explorers ‘Telescopes’ last immense album ‘Hidden Fields’ back in 2015, fuzzy Glaswegians ‘St Deluxe’, who also played on that afore mentioned album, have returned with a magnificent three track monolith entitled ‘Draw A Line’. The band play a stunning mix of drone influenced shoegaze & alternative fuzzed out melodic pop with a heady translucent 60’s slacker vibe. There’s a sonic darkness buried deep within the inner core of St Deluxe that is magnificently balanced with melody & hazy reverberating layered guitars.
The EP opens up with the sonically aggressive, but addictively melodic ‘Draw A Line’. Produced by acclaimed ‘Telescopes’ front man ‘Stephen Lawrie’, ‘Draw A Line’ rides a wave of droning, arcing guitars courtesy of ‘Lawrie’, a steady drum pattern and those explosive chorus breaks that are full of shoegazing, fuzz pop promise! Track two ‘Fine Alright’ screams 60’s Stooges with its impressive ‘Iggy’ inspired vocal parts, droning guitars, pounding explosive drums & screaming lead breaks. Coming in at two minutes and four seconds ‘Fine Alright’ is a modern day fuzzed out garage rock gem! The EP’s closing track is a cover version of Rocky Erikson’s 1981 classic ‘Red Temple Prayer (Two Headed Dog) originally released on his brilliant album ‘The Evil One’. ‘St Deluxe’ do it justice and keep it sufficiently scuzzy without it going overboard or into overkill territory.
