EP REVIEW | Ask For Joy – New Private Window.

ARTIST: Ask For Joy

RELEASE: New Private Window

RELEASE DATE: 04/03/16

Texas based ‘Ask For Joy’ aka Aaron Rossetto is something of an underground independent dream-gazing phenomenon. Successfully writing, recording, producing & self releasing music so blissfully compelling & groundbreaking that hasn’t gone unnoticed, but has gone on to help inspire previously unknown underground shoegazing artists to begin their own sonic journeys. Now his eight and latest EP entitled ‘New Private Window’, the first release containing all original material since 2013’s ‘Pins And Needles’, gets its official release on March 4th 2016. This entire EP swims in lush, shimmering, dreamy reverb that wraps itself around the melodic exoskeleton of every single track and in turn leaves this listener overwhelmed with sonic delight. Its layers of impressive guitars & synths compliment the hauntingly serene backing vocals and they all in turn hug & protect Aaron’s vocal tracks with aplomb. There’s a dark undercurrent hidden within the lyrical content of ‘New Private Window’ too that explores ‘secret stories & behaviours’ of individuals who don’t normally let their guard down or speak about things like addiction, substance abuse or sexually suggestive expressions of love & lust. The title of the EP ‘New Private Window’ refers to the option in modern web browsers that starts an untracked session, leaving no search or site traces behind for others to discover …..

The EP opens up with ‘Slow Kiss’ and we’re treated to duel vocal lines masterfully guiding us through a wall of shimmering reverberating guitars and hazy electronic drum patterns. ‘Slow Kiss’ explodes into a cacophony of golden waves held within a whirlwind of pounding drums, unrelenting guitars & intense choir like vocal arrangements. ‘Pinprick Eyes’ cuts an inverted wave of charging guitars, soaring synth swells & pounding drums as it enters the musical arena. It’s the first single to be lifted from this new EP & it’s a windswept sonic island within a sea of reverberating melodic joy! It charges through peaks & troughs of shimmering layered reverb drenched guitars with stunning swirling vocal progressions. Track three ‘I Shiver I Shake’ is a quivering, waving wall of guitars & sparse percussion that hugs & protects a beautiful stand out vocal performance courtesy of Aaron and his precise vocal production techniques.

‘Cherry Popsicle’ is the standout track for me on this entire release! Its a dark, trawling, monolith of a piece that juggernauts its way through the sonic ether. The vocal track straddles a repetitive drum pattern, intertwined at times with heavily distorted soaring guitars. ‘Cherry popsicle’ has an overall addictive, melodic strut that would make John Travolta jealous! A true masterpiece & definitely recommended listening! Up next, ‘Lovers Interred’ screams mid 80’s post -punk with its electronic drums, menacing synths & guitars melded with those stripped back vocal lines and soaring chorus parts! Im hearing early ‘Echo And The Bunnymen & The Cure’ but with a modern twist that only Aaron Rossetto could instil. The seductively melodic ‘Sugar Coma’ charges on a sonic steed of pounding drums, addictive synth swells & layered guitars. That post-punk inspired vocal line is still evident here too and it adds to the overall ascetic of the track. The EP’s closer entitled ‘When Your Heart Stops Beating (An Amp Of Epinephrine)’ has the brute force of a ‘Jesus And Mary Chain’ track but with the melodic vocal structure that could only be constructed by ‘Ask For Joy’. It soars when required & calms the sonic ether when needed but its the stunning synth swell midway through that grabs this listeners attention and carries it along within its swirling maelstrom of sound. A brilliant closing track to a stunning EP.
