EP REVIEW | Choreography – Recollected EP.

ARTIST: Choreography

RELEASE: Recollected

RELEASE DATE: 17/03/16

Los Angeles based post-punk trio ‘Choreography’ self released their debut EP entitled ‘Recollected’ to the masses back on the 17th March 2016. Their sound is firmly enshrouded   deep within the well woven post-punk fabric but it also has an inner layer of cold-wave fascination that occasionally shows its hand as this four track EP works through its intensely atmospheric gears.

The EP opens with ‘Third Progression’ and we’re instantly treated to a whirling drone as the track builds up momentum and prepares itself for the sonic onslaught ahead. Reverb drenched guitars swirl around that thunderous drum pattern as that now trademarked post punk bass sound drives a deep furrow through the sonic arena with aplomb. The vocals are subdued and atmospheric & I must also give kudos to the magnificent attacking drum pattern.  Fans of Bauhaus and The Sisters Of Mercy will enjoy track two ‘Memory Falls’ as its creeping vocal, explosive chorus progressions and immensely addictive guitar lines create a tense musical affair. Theres subtle hints of ‘Joy Division’ hidden within the framework of ‘Nowhere’ that tweaks this listeners interest as the track weaves its way through peaks and troughs of immense sound. The bass lines are solid and they compliment that stunning drum pattern with aplomb. A really, really great track. The EP’s closer has heaps of atmospheric swagger and it instantly reminds me of early ‘Cure’as we’re treated to it’s magical cinematic synth swells, throbbing bass lines and that reclusive vocal track that seems to hang in suspended animation as everything else rages around it. ‘Imposed’ is a brilliant finale to highly enjoyable debut EP. More to come from these guys for sure.
