Following on from their immense 2015 six track monolithic wall of sound entitled ‘Lack’, Californian based heavy shoegazers ‘Solip’ have returned with an immense two track EP entitled ‘Dissociation’. With a sound that swerves between noisy atmospheric shoegaze & driving doomgaze, melded together with intense droning guitars & melodic ambient post-rock ‘Solip’ tell stories through the medium of frequency manipulation. The band are made up of Guitar/Vocals – Ryan Henderson, Guitar – Justin Oronos, Bass – Glendon Diaz & Drums – Travis Morgan and the EP was recorded by Scott Evans at Antisleep Audio and mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. ‘Dissociation’ is available to buy/download right now from: solip.bandcamp.com
The EP opens up with ‘I: Erasure’. Intense atmospherics held firm within a swirling, droning guitar line opens the door to an immense wall of sonic delight. The drum track & melodic baseline fixes the entire track to the earth as all around it moves within an explosive reverberating whirlwind. The vocal track is melodic and at times barely audible but that in itself keeps the listener interested. There’s a brilliant spacious break half way through that injects a post-rock swirl into proceedings before the track erupts into its stunning finale. Track two and the EP’s closer, the brilliant ‘II: Nearing Zero’ begins in a atmospheric post-gaze world before we’re treated to its inner doom-gazing leanings. The vocals are more prominent here and it adds some well deserved clarity to ‘Solip’s’ songwriting & song structuring. ‘II: Nearing Zero’ builds and builds until it unleashes a droning maelstrom of layered, reverb induced guitars, pounding drums & throbbing bass that seems to circumnavigate those impressive doom-laden vocals.
